Possible El Niño Phenomenon Might Occur Next Year, PAGASA Says
The state weather bureau PAGASA has warned the Filipino people of possible El Niño phenomenon on the first quarter of 2019.
On Saturday (September 1, 2018), the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warned of possible dry spell next year.
The weather agency said that 65 percent chance of El Niño was already expected during the fourth quarter of 2018.
PAGASA’s climate monitoring and prediction section officer-in-charge Ana Liza Solis said that the anomalies on sea surface temperature may hit 0.5 degrees this month, which is the El Niño threshold.
Most models of the weather agency show that a weak El Niño will develop this month, according to Solis.
PAGASA weather observer Ger Anne Marie Duran reported that the country’s rainfall pattern will be affected by El Niño starting January to February 2019.
“El Niño will affect the rainfall pattern over the northern Philippines or Luzon area,” Duran said quoted by Philstar.
Duran also said that the phenomenon would bring warmer nights in the country during those months although it was the coldest months.
Filipino people would also experience a warmer Christmas season in some parts of the country this year.
